It can strike children at any age, including pre-school children and even toddlers. Yet diabetes in children is often diagnosed late, when the child has diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), or it is misdiagnosed completely. In many parts of the world, insulin, the main life-saving medication that children with diabetes need to survive, is not available (or is available but remains inaccessible for reasons of economy, geography or constraints on supply). As a consequence, many children die of diabetes, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Those closest to the child - family, school staff, family doctor - may not be aware of the ominous signs. The World Diabetes Day 2007 and 2008 campaigns set out to challenge this and firmly establish the message that ‘no child should die of diabetes'.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-11-14T15:30:33Z</dcterms:modified>

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and the American Diabetes Association will be highlighting a different facet of the illness every week of the month.
Many Faces of Diabetes

Week 1: Caregivers. ADA will offer resources and information to those that take care of those diagnosed with diabetes.
Week 2: Employees. Promotion of healthy lifestyles in the workplace can prevent type 2 diabetes, save lives and save companies money.
Week 3: Diabetes around the world. Motivating people to fight diabetes through public awareness and the development of policies for the prevention, treatment and care of those with diabetes.
Week 4: At-risk populations. Raising awareness of the trend that indicates minorities are at high risk of developing diabetes.
Week 5: Youth and Type-1 Diabetes. Promotion of resources and information for children with type-1 diabetes and their families.

Diabetes has no cure and is the 5th leading cause of death by disease. Awareness can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes and save lives. At present 1 in 4 Americans has diabetes or is at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is one of the fastest growing health issues of the 21st century. There are many sites that claim they have a cure for this disease. These sites prey on the hopes and fears of people with Diabetes and their families. Don't fall for it!
Type 1 Diabetes is NOT CAUSED BY OVER EATING OR A BAD DIET! It is an autoimmune disease caused by a failure of the pancreas to produce insulin. Type 1 diabetics require insulin to live; without, they die.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-11-03T17:14:48Z</dcterms:modified>

Talking about Juvenille diabetes cure?
